Doug Levinson, the author of 75/25, was a young, successful attorney
who like so many other lawyers - dreamt of doing something more creative
than suing people. But, Doug found the lawyer typecasting difficult to
overcome, so he went back to school and earned an MBA at UCLA.
Getting an MBA helped Doug achieve his dream of trading in his law
practice for a very successful business career, including landing a position as
CEO of a biotech company. And, immediately after graduating, Doug was also
asked to develop and teach a Business Law course part time for UCLA's
Anderson Graduate School of Management. In fact, Doug ultimately
became one of the most popular instructors at Anderson.
But - while Doug was teaching at Anderson - he kept wondering why
virtually every business school in the country offered a basic law course, while
virtually no law schools offered a basic business course. Doug
concluded that this omission was due, in part, to the fact that there were no
suitable materials to teach such a course. So, Doug developed the course
materials from scratch: more than 700 PowerPoint slides with sound effects,
animation and original graphics.
Doug's Business For Lawyers class was adopted by the USC Law School
where it became (and remains) hugely popular. Later, Doug was also invited
to teach his course at Boalt Hall - the law school at UC Berkeley. That
course was also an overwhelming success. And, subsequently, the course was
offered to practicing attorneys through UC Berkeley's Haas Business School,
USC's Marshall Business School and "in-house" at nationally-renowned law
firms.
But - as well received as Doug's PowerPoint presentations were -
Doug still couldn't find a book that was designed to explain high-level business
concepts to smart people, in plain language. So he created it -
75/25, ¾ of an MBA, ¼ of the Grief. 75/25 was the embodiment of everything Doug
learned in years teaching business to thousands of the top law students and
lawyers in the country.
75/25 takes a completely fresh look at traditional business disciplines
using totally original, but often profound, explanations,
simplifications, concepts and graphics. For example, 75/25 incorporates Doug's
technique for fully explaining Microeconomics and Macroeconomics in under 5 minutes.
Similarly, 75/25 completely explains - in roughly 1,500 words of
colloquial language - how to read financial statements.
The result, as I mentioned, is a revolutionary type of book - a book
that covers the essence of a two year graduate program at top business
schools in a single, completely original, easy-to-read volume. And, it works. In
fact, 75/25 was recently adopted for use in a Business For Lawyers
course at Stanford Law School. |
